I wouldn't say invulnerable too loudly. Cort seems to be a pincushion for other party members' arrows. _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |

The other party members need to not shoot into Melee! The last two battles the only damage I took was from my own party!
And I said "Neigh-Invulnerable"! |

Crap. Cort didn't get hit once by frienly fire today. Pick up the slack people! If we don't shoot him on a regular basis he will look silly when he complains about being a pin cushion because of friendly fire.
So brief recap for Jason. We got the mirror. It's magical (detect magic spell). Went south to try and signal the dragon with it for a reason I don't remember. Gettting its help or something. Ambushed by lizard men on last watch of our rest. Everyone but Cort, Aiden and Thoven went to 0 or less hit points. Session ended. |

Awesome! Thanks for the recap... I look forward to reading the Journal as well.
I should be returning this Saturday the 17th (tomorrow) so I'll be there to play the lovable Paladin next week. |

Cort would be proud of Pip and Aiden. They took down a half dozen attackers without hitting our party once. They did fire into melee occasionally, but the shots were tactically sound and necessary.
My favorite moment was seeing Darubian cast a Hold Person spell on a couple attackers in the second round of combat; freezing them with their arms raised and a fierce look on their faces. Took bad Aiden and Cort took their heads before the spell wore off...
Thoven would have killed them but he was too busy climbing over the pile of bodies, trying to keep a surrouned Bofac from going down (yet again). _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |

Yes, those frozen attackers that there AC 5 became AC 10 is badass. Also I brianed one of them to death with a nat. 20. "In the name of Torm be gone from my sight you follow beast." But now it is time to heal, and see if we can talk to a dragon.

DM, you mentioned the spears were decorated with some strings or charms (or something?). Thoven will take a trophy from one of the spears that hit him and tie it around the top of his halberd.
I'm looking for a description of what I've decorated my weapon with; it's probably the first of a series of small trophies Thoven plans to collect from his adeventures. _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |

The trinket is just a small wrapping with a couple beads threaded on it and what looks like a small spearhead at the end of the string made out of some kind of repilian scale. _________________ "Identity confirmed...welcome agent." |

Ted "Eldrad" Logan checks out his pack to get his spell book for study and finds a village elder. The elder hands him a wand of fireballs... 'may this be of no use to you... find the geck... our time is short.'
Ready for that random event to get rolled up. |

Yes, LV 4!
The heros after a battle with ONE of the gaints, and lots of help from a dragon, have killed the evil gaints. And at a good cost. Once every 2 weeks for the next 3 years, the biggest cow must be given to the dragon. Thank you Eldrad, for not trying to kill us, but almost killing us. So......

What? I should not trust the Wizard that pulled me out of the battle and bandaged my wounds during combat, just because an EVIL dragon said so?

Thoven is feeling pretty beat up right about now. Once we return to Inzeldren and arrange for a place to leave her tribute he’s going to want to get to town to clean up and heal. If others are planning on taking a few days to train he will go looking for a Smithy to pound out the dents in his armor and make some routine purchases.
Since we didn’t ask Count Palfrey if it was OK to enlist his farmers in a three-year contract with Inzeldren Thoven recommends the party each chip in enough gold to pay for the next 12 months of tribute. If a cow costs 10 GP and there are 50 weeks in a year, that works out to 250 GP, or 31 GP and 25 SP per party member. Thoven would rather chip in part of his gold than make some poor farmer give up his cow to appease the Green Dragon.
OOC, does a character get full HP when they level up? I’ve gained enough XP to reach Level 4... _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |

I would just like to say that we have played AD&D for 4 months now!
Doesn't seem possible that we have actually played that long.
Funny thing is we are actually ahead of schedule with the campaign. We will probably finish with book I in a month or 2 which would be the 6 month mark. That is actually ahead of schedule from the last time "I" played which was around 9 months and finishing book II in a year and a half or so. _________________ "Identity confirmed...welcome agent." |

…Meanwhile, back at the keep…
After spending a week slogging around the bug-infested Shriken Mire Thoven is glad to have a few days to relax at Palfrey Keep. Making the most of his time Thoven first visits the Count’s blacksmith.
The short smithy shakes his head, powerful arms held across his chest, as he looks at the splint mail armor Thoven holds before him. “I heard about the fight with the giant, but I didn’t really believe it until now. I’ve never seen the armor bands damaged so badly before; you were wearing this while the giant hammered on it?” Sheepishly Thoven nods his head and says “but I really WAS trying to avoid his blows. It just seemed like no matter what everyone else did to him the giant kept focused on me, trying to turn me into a red spot on the cave floor.” “You should be happy lad, armor or no, you’re lucky to be alive after taking this kind of beating. I suppose you want me to bend it back again…”
“Please. This armor belonged to my Grandfather and it holds personal meaning for me. I wouldn’t feel right knowing I didn’t take care of the armor that’s served my family for three generations.” The smith uncrosses his arms and smiles a great broad grin at Thoven. “Of course lad, leave it with me and I’ll make it as good as new; perhaps even better.”
While the smithy is repairing his armor Thoven visits the tailor and orders a pair of knee-high boots like his friend Aiden wears. The new boots he left home with nearly a year ago are now cut, cracked and worn out. The close-fitting boots being fitted for him were made of some type of waterproof leather, their stout soles imbedded with hobnails to give Thoven good footing the next time he has to fight in a damp cave. Light weight leather gauntlets and a few other purchases go into Thoven’s pack. He also makes a point of visiting the cook one evening and securing some more jerky, hard tack and a couple onions; enough rations to last him at least two weeks in the wild.
When Thoven returns he finds the Count’s smithy was as good as his word. The splint mail armor looks as smooth and clean as new. The banded plates glisten, the mail underneath has been restored and even the leather padding seems to have been adjusted again to fit Thoven perfectly. Thoven purchases a hammer, pliers and small pry-bar from the smithy before he leaves. These tools are wrapped up and go into his bag, joining the large needles, leather thread and spare mail rings Thoven has picked up while at the keep. He now has a small bag of tools to help him repair his armor the next time he’s beaten up and days away from the nearest town.
Thoven has been spending part of each morning sparring with Cort, Pip, Adaxius and a few of the Count’s guards. The day before setting out on want he expects will be a long a difficult journey through the Thornwood Thoven leaves his uncle’s halberd in his room and spars only with the lightweight long sword the party recovered from the earlier ambush along the Churnett river. The halberd is a powerful weapon but Thoven keeps replaying the fight with the giant in his mind. Thoven knew of few men as fast as he with the pole arm, but in that fight in the cave he could not land a single blow on the huge, hideous monster. This sword was lighter than the sword Thoven had carried for the better part of a year, and yet it seemed to strike the wooden target dummy with almost as much force as his family halberd. He would see if this weapon was as good in a fight as he believed it to be.
That night Thoven turns to Margareta, “Your brother has been a most gracious host. He has asked us to accomplish a difficult task, but with his help and my companions I believe we can accomplish what we set out to do. To travel swiftly through the woods I would like to leave my halberd here at the keep. Do you think your bother would let me leave my weapon in his armory until I return for it?” _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |

To Trigger: What does the roof look like it's made out of.
To everyone else. If the inhabitants are who I think they are, the bandits we fought before, we aren't going to win by brute force but will need to think our way out of it. So with that in mind here are the spells I can do that might help.
Light, Alarm, Feather fall, Unseen servant, Invisibility, Web.
So thoughts are that we have to do one of two things. Draw them into an ambush or sneak in with surprise. So we could use unseen servant, light, invisibility to combine to a diversion near the main gate. Light spell cast on stick to look like a torch, carried by an unseen servant controlled by me who is invisible. I make enough noise and they see the light and come out of the keep to attack/investigate. Or maybe do it on the side without arrow slits. That way they have to come out to attack and can't shoot arrows from inside.
Other thoughts. The obvious invisiblity on the thief so he can do recon. Find more info so we can go in better prepared. Maybe even have him camp out on the roof observing the inside for a bit. As long as they don't have a high enough Int and reason to think someone is there he should be fine.
A light spell in the middle of the keep would bring people into the courtyard, but after that I don't know how it would help. We wouldnt' be able to do enough damage to kill a lot of people. Would get them to show themselves to confirm the enemy, but not sure what else that would get us.
Web could trap them, but I'm not sure what else we would get. Maybe if we can draw themselves into the open where I can get close enough to web them? But I wouldn't have invisibility then and would likely have to depend on a camoflouge roll from Aiden. Webbing them would be good though. They couldn't move much and we could pincushion them from a distance.
I dunno. thoughts. |

Even though I’d like to cut a tree trunk and use it to bash down the front door, I agree with your thoughts on some type of ambush. It’s nice to be the ones doing the ambushing for a change.
If I were in the keep I’d rather not go outside and into any planned ambush. They may send out a token recon force of expendable troops to see who they’re facing but keep their best troops inside. They build these stone fortresses just to avoid getting hacked up by people like us. Plus who says an evil priest couldn’t use his abilities on us from inside the safety of the keep?
I also doubt we’re all sneaky enough to all get into the keep and start slaying people undetected. Stealth is probably our best route to success but I can’t assume we’ll be able to go 100% sneaky.
I’m guessing some combination of the two would work best. I like the possibility of an invisible thief as our scout on the roof. Some other party members (archers?) outside could draw the enemy out and create a distraction for the people inside the keep, and the noisy melee fighters would have a better chance to sneak into the keep and start hacking. After the outside guys start working Adaxius could slip in and help out the melee infiltrators by backstabbing any sentries or easy targets. I’d recommend the priest and wizard accompany the melee fighters; to try to hold / silence the evil priest, hold / web any strong melee opponents and be nearby with healing when the melee fighters start soaking up damage. BTW – how many healing potions do we have?
My $0.02
Cort, Thoven and Bofac want to know where you are carrying the Potion of Heroism. We’re counting on you to drink it if one of us goes down in the assault, and we want to be able to take it off your corpse if you’re the first one of us to fall. _________________ We must, indeed, all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately. |
